- Joe Taylor is the owner of Otonabee Meat Packers in Peterborough.[1] The 2010 campaign was apparently his first bid for public office.
- Terry Guiel is a pop-rock musician in Peterborough. He has released two CDs, Little Red Balloon (1999) and Beguieled (2001).[2] Guiel started an annual event called "Songwriters Unite for the United Way" in 1999, and he later took part in a successful lobbying effort against a restrictive municipal noise by-law.[3] In 2003, he was chair of Downtown Countdown, Peterborough's Centennial Celebration, and the Rotary Victoria Day Fireworks.[4] Guiel is also a practising Christian; he wrote an article in late 2002 defending the use of religious themes in Christmas school plays.[5] He was elected to the Peterborough city council for Ashburnham Ward in 2003. After the election, he chaired the city's culture and heritage committee, community funding review committee, and social services committee.[6] Guiel opposed plans for a parkway extension through protected green space.[7] In January 2004, he introduced a successful motion creating a reserve fund to bring new doctors to Peterborough.[8] In the summer of the same year, he organized a benefit concert for victims of a damaging flood.[9] A 2005 "report card" in Peterborough This Week listed Guiel as one of the better members of council.[10] He planned to run for re-election in 2006, but withdrew from the contest before election day. He later served as acting executive director for the Downtown Business Improvement Area. In 2010, he ran unsuccessfully for deputy reeve in Otonabee-South Monaghan.[11]

- Mary J. Smith was raised on a dairy farm in the Emily Township, Ontario and has lived in Lakefield since 1976.[12] She was elected as deputy reeve of the latter community in 1997, prior to its merger with Smith-Ennismore.[13] She was later elected as the Lakefield representative to the amalgamated council in 2000 and 2003.[14] In 2006, she defeated Dave Cavanagh to become Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield's deputy reeve. She also served as a Peterborough County representative on Peterborough's police services board.[15] In 2007, Smith accused Reeve Ron Millen of not adequately supporting a medical centre for Lakefield. This followed a vote in which Millen and two other councillors refused to sign as loan guarantors for a foundation that was raising money for the centre. Millen denied in the charge and accused Smith of spreading misinformation, which she rejected.[16] She defeated Millen in the 2010 election. Smith's father, Lloyd Ashmore, was also a prominent local politician.[17]
